The Conservatoire National du Saumon Sauvage, which manages the largest salmon restocking farm in Europe, has installed a system using the BACnet protocol and Micromedia International’s ALERT software solution to monitor all its alarms.  

The salmon farm’s production activity requires reliable, constant monitoring of sensitive parameters, so that action can be taken as quickly as possible to ensure the survival of the fish farm.

Reactivity, a vital requirement  

Located at Chanteuges in the Haute-Loire, where the Desges meets the Allier, the salmon farm’s primary objective is to restock the entire Loire basin and its main tributary, the Allier, with salmon, and to ensure the conservation of these fish.  

The site comprises a main building of 7,800 m2 with 204 rearing tanks, and its production capacity for restocking is comparable to that of the major North American and Canadian salmon farms.  

Redundancy, a guarantee for alarm transmission  

More than 100 devices using the BACnet protocol are distributed across the site to monitor around 150 highly sensitive parameters relating to :  

– Hydraulic parameters: water flow entering the pool, operation of valves and pumps, ….  

– Physico-chemical values of the rearing water: temperature, oxygen, etc.  

– BMS values: lighting, air conditioning, heating, fire control, access control, etc.  

To guarantee the highest possible level of service availability, the ALERT software is installed on redundant machines and the entire BACnet network of the salmon farm is monitored via a Metasys (Johnson Controls) supervision system.  

To prevent hardware failure, alarms are transmitted using 2 different equipments: an analogue modem for voice calls and a second modem using the cellular network to send SMS messages. Each alarm is sent simultaneously by the 2 devices, to ensure that the alarm message is received correctly.
